Ian Wilson - Apple Distinguished Educator

"There are apps for each area of the curriculum, every age, all abilities and which suit the complete range of learning styles. Apps can bring subjects to life by enabling learners to engage, participate, consume and create, reflect, review, compete and collaborate. Apps help make the iPad a Personal Learning Studio"

Learning with iPad

A whole new way to engage and educate your students

An incredibly responsive Multi-Touch screen. A large, high-resolution LED-backlit display. A design that's thin and light enough to take anywhere. iPad isn't just the best device of its kind - it's a whole new kind of device. And it's poised to change the learning landscape. iPad apps are expanding the learning experience both inside and outside the classroom. From interactive lessons to study aids to productivity tools, there's something for everyone.

We have created a list of our top 10 reasons why the iPad is perfectly designed for education:

  Keep the work flowing
One iPad goes a long way when students are working in a group. It gives them instant access to the information they need to succeed - either through apps, stored data, or the internet. It's far more dynamic than a laptop - it can be shared, passed around, propped up, gathered around - it quickly becomes a key tool for enabling group work. This instant, shared, tactile access really keeps student group projects flowing!

Control your classroom
Using Mobile Mouse app, control your interactive white board from across the room. Get away from the front of the classroom and allow children to work live on the board for a more collaborative classroom dynamic.

Stimulate debate with the Guardian Eyewitness app.

Using high quality photos from around the world to bring the debate alive in the classroom, discuss:
  • A-level Modern Languages
  • Citizenship
  • English
  • Geography
and much more...
  Make Music
Whether it's just bashing the virtual keys of the piano or playing something more tuneful, the iPad has a number of apps to make music.
Virtuoso is free and is a large keyboard that can be moved to access higher and lower notes.
Keep records on student behavior or assess progress
Use TapForms to customize or create forms that can be used to track all kinds of data on your students. TapForms is essentially a database, so many different kinds of fields, drop-down lists, and buttons can be set up in the program. Forms can even be shared with other teachers! Records can be exported to desktop and then analyzed in a spreadsheet or for permanent record keeping.
ibooks in the classroom

Free copies of Shakespeare

Senior classes annotate their own copies of current Shakespeare play using either iBooks or Stanza both free apps. Scroll through scenes and acts, bookmark and annotate, search for quotations, find dictionary definitions, copy and paste annotations into own documents.

Paint& Draw
Brushes is one of the many software programs for the iPad that allow you to paint, draw, sketch and doodle. Share your work with iPad painting and drawing groups like this on Flickr!

Record classroom notes
Use smartNote to send students outlines or worksheet activities. They can then 'write' on them and share them back with you for assessment or send them to the web for pickup at home. Using this app, students can also audio record ideas or instructions for later use. SmartNote allows students to insert images, browser views, and tons of widgets in a personalized notebook.

Navigate your world

We have found 3 great apps for geography and tourism
  1. Google Earth - Works great for the ipad and perfect for a field trip prepare placemarks for key loacations.
  2. OS GB 250k - A free OS map measuring tools, route finding and settlement information at your finger tips
  3. Pacific Disaster Centre - This free app provides an updated stream of information for natural disasters around the globe. This includes tectonic hazards, flooding and other meteorological hazards. Useful for 'Risky World' style topics

Presentations

The iPad is perfect for instant presentations in the class or with a connector, whole school assemblies. Make sure you install the Keynote App.
Or use i-Prompt in reality an auto cue. Children, or grown-ups, can copy text into i-Prompt. You can change the speed of the text as it rolls through the auto cue to suit the skills and fluency of the reader. It's hard to show in static images but works well.Great for speech making and helping children read more fluently.
